In the heart of Virginia’s horse country, where massive thoroughbreds usually steal the spotlight, two pint-sized friends are making the biggest waves. Meet Button, a 30-inch-tall Miniature Horse, and Waffles, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Separated by species but united by their short stature and big personalities, they have become the ultimate “Best Friends” of the Middleburg community.
Short Stature, Big Connection
The friendship began when the Harrison family brought Waffles home as a puppy. At the time, Waffles was intimidated by the farm’s larger horses. However, when he met Button, who was closer to his eye level, it was an instant match. Instead of the usual dog-horse tension, there was a playful curiosity that quickly turned into an inseparable bond.
“It was like they both realized they were the ‘short’ ones on the farm,” says Sarah Harrison. “They started sharing a water trough, and before we knew it, they were spending every afternoon together in the paddock.”
The Daily Routine
Their daily routine is like something out of a storybook. Every morning, Waffles waits by the stable door for Button to be released. Once they are out in the field, the “Corgi Zoomies” begin. Waffles circles Button at high speed, while Button responds with playful hops and gentle nudges.
Their favorite game is “Follow the Leader.” Usually, it’s Waffles leading the way, with Button trotting closely behind. In the afternoons, they can be found napping side-by-side in the shade of a large oak tree—a 30-inch pony and a 12-inch dog, completely at peace.
A Lesson in Acceptance
Button and Waffles remind us that friendship doesn’t require us to look the same or even speak the same language. It’s about finding someone who shares your pace of life. In Middleburg, they aren’t just pets; they are a symbol of harmony.
“When people see them together, they can’t help but smile,” Sarah adds. “They prove that no matter how small you are, you can have a friendship that fills up the whole world.”
