The Cow and Her Bodyguard: How a Jack Russell Terrier Became the Protector of a 1,500-lb Cow in Vermont

Location: Burlington, Vermont, USA

In the lush, green pastures of Burlington, Vermont, an unusual sight catches the eye of every passerby. It’s not just the beautiful landscape; it’s the sight of “Maisy,” a massive 1,500-pound Holstein cow, wandering the fields with her tiny, 15-pound bodyguard, “Scout,” a Jack Russell Terrier. This duo has redefined the meaning of “Inseparable,” proving that friendship is measured by the heart, not the height.

An Unlikely Friendship

The friendship began two years ago when Scout was just a puppy. On his first day at the farm, instead of being intimidated by the giant animals, Scout walked straight up to Maisy and began barking at a stray crow that was bothering her. Maisy, known for her gentle nature, lowered her head and gave Scout a soft “moo” of approval. Since then, they haven’t spent a single day apart.

The Tiny Protector

Scout takes his job very seriously. Whether it’s alerting the farmers to a broken fence or keeping unwanted coyotes at bay from the pasture edge, Scout is always on duty. But his favorite task is “grooming” time. Maisy will lie down in the grass, and Scout will jump on her back, walking up and down to catch any pesky flies or just to find the perfect spot for a nap.

“It’s the strangest, most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen,” says John Miller, the farm owner. “Maisy won’t even go into the milking parlor unless Scout is sitting by the door waiting for her. They have a secret language that we just don’t understand.”

A Bond for the Ages

In the cold Vermont winters, the two can be found huddled together in the warm barn. Scout sleeps curled up right against Maisy’s neck, benefiting from her massive body heat, while Maisy seems comforted by the tiny heartbeat of her best friend.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that in the vastness of the American countryside, companionship is the most valuable crop a farmer can raise. Scout and Maisy aren’t just a cow and a dog; they are a team, a family, and a true “Inseparable Duo.”
