Meet Duke, a 100-pound Great Dane, and Pip, a tiny ginger kitten who weighs barely two pounds. Their bond is a heartwarming reminder that sometimes, the best friends are the ones we least expect.
An Unexpected Introduction
When the Thompson family rescued Pip from a local shelter, they were naturally nervous about how Duke, their gentle giant, would react. Great Danes are known as “gentle giants,” but Pip was so small she could literally fit inside Duke’s water bowl.

“We were prepared for a long, slow introduction process,” says Emily Thompson. “We kept them separated by a baby gate for the first few days, but Pip had other plans. She squeezed through the bars and marched right up to Duke while he was napping.”
The Nanny Dog
Instead of being startled, Duke simply opened one eye, gave Pip a massive, wet lick, and went back to sleep. From that moment on, Duke became Pip’s self-appointed nanny. Pip can often be found napping on top of Duke’s massive paws or even hitching a ride on his back as he walks through the house.
